Producing mushrooms with our logs is very easy
Shiitake-producing logs are simply soaked in water for 24 hours. After 1-2 weeks, the mushrooms will start to come out. After harvesting (they take a week to develop), we only need to let the log rest for two to three months to submerge it again and stimulate a new bloom. In this way we can have 3-4 mushroom blooms a year, up to 4 years in a row!
In the case of Nameko and Reishi logs, these logs are placed outside, half-buried in a humid and shady place. The rains and temperature changes themselves will cause two mushroom blooms to occur in spring and autumn for 2-4 years.
Instructions for the use of the shiitake trunk producer
Step 1.
Immerse the log in non-chlorinated water for 24 hours.
Step 2.
Place it in a container with a little water and put the greenhouse bag over it for 4 days to keep it moist.
Step 3.
On a plate with water, wait another 5-15 days for the mushrooms to come out and open before harvesting.
Step 4.
After harvesting the mushrooms, let your log rest for two months in the water container if indoors. If you have a garden, better outdoors in a damp, shady place.

Frequently asked questions on the handling of producer trunks
I bought one of your logs but…. I can’t remember what to do next!
It’s OK!…remember that your log producer came with a label where we explain the basic instructions. But if you have any further questions, check out the FAQs and we’re sure you’ll find a solution… if not, you can always write to us at info@funginatur.com.
Where is the best place for your location?
Look for a humid and shady place, without direct sun or draughts. A very dark place is not good either, the fungus needs some light to flower. If you can keep it outside, the humidity at night, the contact with the soil and the rain will keep it moist. Indoors remember to keep it in a tray or dish with water and soak it every 2-3 months.
Do I have to take any special care if I leave my trunk outside?
Outdoors is the ideal place to keep them moist, but beware of slugs and snails which can damage the mushrooms as soon as they start to emerge. When it is producing, place it on a plate with water to prevent slugs from climbing up the trunk or surround it with a repellent (ash, salt, eggshells…).
I have dipped the trunk and everything…. but no shiitakes appear!
Don’t worry, sometimes it takes up to 10 or 15 days for them to appear, it depends a lot on temperature, humidity, etc. It is also possible that the fungus is not ready to fruit yet, it can take up to 16 months to mature from inoculation! Wait a few weeks and try again, check that after removing it from the water, it stays moist for a few more days. To do this, keep it in the plastic bag for 3-4 days and then in a dish or tray with water until you harvest the mushrooms.
* A tip: if after the 24h immersion you put it in the plastic bag in the fridge for another day, we make the fungus think that autumn is coming and it has to start producing mushrooms.
My trunk has only produced one or two mushrooms 🙁
The first bloom is almost always small, let it rest for a couple of months and repeat the process again, the following blooms will be bigger.
White mould appears on the bark
It is normal that if the humidity of the bark is high, the mycelium of the shiitake mushroom will grow on the bark as well. You don’t have to remove it or anything!
I repeated the process and this time no mushrooms appeared
Sometimes it happens that the fungus takes a longer break, especially if it is already two years old or older. Keep it in good humidity conditions and it will produce again. If you take care, your trunk can produce for 2-4 years (depending on the thickness). Like all trees, it needs to be especially well cared for in its old age.
Can heat or cold endanger my trunk?
Cold will not harm the fungus, it will only stop producing during the colder months. Heat will only harm the fungus if it exceeds 30 degrees Celsius. In this case, find a cooler place for it.
Mushrooms are already growing… now what do I do!!!!
Congratulations, your trunk is happy with you. Wait to pick the mushrooms when the cap has almost fully opened, but without losing its convex shape.
To harvest, cut each mushroom at the base of the stem, just above the bark, using a knife or scissors.
